The 2018 Moores School of Music Jazz Festival will occur on February 23 & 24, 2018 at the Moores Opera House on the campus of the University of Houston. The festival will feature trumpeter Dominick Farinacci and a full slate of Houston jazz artist judges that will be announced shortly.
The schedule will include high school/junior high/middle school performances all day day Friday and Saturday, with each band having a thirty minute performance slot along with a thirty minute judges clinic immediately following. At noon on Friday and Saturday, the featured guest artist will give a clinic in the Moores Opera House that is open to all participating bands and the general public. The Moores School Jazz Ensemble will perform on Friday night at 7:30 featuring a set of local jazz artists, and the Moores School Jazz Orchestra will perform on Saturday at 7:30 PM featuring the Guest Artist.
In a change this year, there will be additional prizes for the winning ensembles and soloists. As usual, awards will be given for outstanding MS/HS bands of each day, as well as for the festival. In addition, All Star awards will be presented to soloists along with outstanding MS/HS soloist of the day and the festival. All Outstanding Festival awards will be presented on Saturday, and the All Star Awards and the Outstanding Awards for each day will be presented on both Friday and Saturday.
In a change, the Outstanding HS band for each day as well as the Outstanding HS soloist for each day will be invited to perform with the Moores School Jazz Ensemble (Friday) and the Moores School Jazz Orchestra (Saturday). The Outstanding Band for Friday would be invited to open for the Jazz Ensemble and the Outstanding Soloist would be invited to sit in on a tune with the group. The band and soloist for Saturday would be invited to do the same with the Jazz Orchestra.
If you are planning to bring your group to the Jazz Festival, please fill out the following information form as quickly as possible to reserve your time. An email will be sent following your registration to confirm your time and gather more information. The deadline to register is Friday February 9, 2018, but slots will fill up quickly. The fees for the jazz festival this year are $250.00 for Middle School/Junior High Bands and Small Groups, and $300.00 for High School Big Bands. Registration Fees must be paid in full prior to your performance in order to go to the warm up room and stage area.
Checks brought to the Jazz Festival must be signed in and registered at the front desk immediately upon arrival. A receipt will be issued there. If you plan to mail your check in (checks must be received before your performance date and a receipt will be issued upon check in at the festival), please make your check payable to “University of Houston” with “Jazz Fest/your school name” in the memo line. 2017 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Moores School of Music Jazz Festival at the Moores Opera House on the campus of the University of Houston. High School, Junior High, and Middle School performances will occur throughout both days, and there will be evening concerts at the conclusion of both days. The judges for this years festival are Mr. Dennis Dotson, Dr. Woody Witt, Mr. Shelley Carrol, and Mr. Joel Fuglham. At the end of both days, the festival will award the Outstanding Middle School/Junior High and High School Band of the day along with individual All-Star Soloist awards. On Saturday, awards will also be presented for Outstanding Bands and Soloists of the Festival. This year, there will also be opportunities for graduating seniors to perform auditions for the Moores School of Music while on campus with their performing groups.
Both nights will feature special evening concerts. On February 24, the Moores School Jazz Ensemble will perform along with a full performance of the Miles Davis album “The Birth of The Cool” by Houston Area Jazz Artists. On February 25, the Moores School Jazz Orchestra will perform with guest artist Bill Evans on saxophone. Mr. Evans will also present a clinic at 12:00 PM on both days in the Moores Opera House. Any new rhythm section players and winds/brass players who did not perform a concert band audition are invited to audition for MSM Jazz Ensembles on Tuesday August 23 and Thursday August 25. If you are a returning member of the MSM Jazz Orchestra or Jazz Ensemble, you do not need to audition. If you are new to the school or Jazz Program, an audition will be required unless otherwise directed by Mr. Marmolejo or Mr. Kubos. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside Mr. Marmolejo’s office (MSM Room 146). The auditions run from 11:30-1 on both Tuesday and Thursday. Winds, brass, guitars, and bass need to bring instruments while piano and drums will be provided.
Audition materials include the jazz etude found at uhbands.com (go to concert ensembles>auditions>password: audition) and possible sight reading. The Moores School Jazz Program will be on full display at the 2016 Texas Music Educator’s Convention. We invite you to join us on Thursday, February 11 at 11:30 AM in Lila Cockrell Theater as the Moores School of Music Wind Ensemble performs under the direction of David Bertman. The Moores School Wind Ensemble features many current and former students of the MSM Jazz Program along with a strong relationship with Director of Jazz Noe Marmolejo.
On Friday, February 12 at 9:30 PM the Moores School of Music will host its annual Alumni Reunion at the Hilton Palacio Del Rio. Please join Noe Marmolejo, members of the MSM Jazz Orchestra, and former members of the Jazz Orchestra as we reunite and celebrate the accomplishments of the Moores School of Music. Saturday February 13 will feature a clinic by Director of Jazz Studies Noe Marmolejo featuring members of the MSM Jazz Orchestra. The clinic will take place at 12:30 – 1:30 PM in the Convention Center Stars At Night Ballroom 4. Titled Developing the Fundamentally Sound Jazz Ensemble, Marmolejo will cover vocal inflection vs. rhythmic conception, articulation strategies, rhythm section, and tuning. With members of the MSM Jazz Orchestra, he will highlight how to solve some typical practice issues that arise with new jazz groups. A discussion on how to solve basic jazz performance problems will follow. Make sure to stop by these events and interact with the Moores School Jazz Program.
MSM Jazz Festival- Friday and Saturday, February 26-27, 2016
On the weekend of February 26-27, 2016, the Moores School of Music will welcome some of the finest jazz ensembles, educators, and performers from around the country to Houston. The two-day event is packed with school performances, masterclasses, and special concerts by visiting artists alongside the Moores School Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble. Guest Artist Paul Mckee (trombone) will present two FREE clinics at noon each day. He will also appear in concert on Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 PM alongside the Moores School Jazz Orchestra. Local Houston Jazz Artists will join the Moores School Jazz Ensemble on Friday, February 26 at 7:30 PM for a concert as well.
Due to the University of Houston being chosen as a debate spot for the Republican Party during the weekend of February 26-27, the Moores School Jazz Festival will take place in downtown Houston at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts (Zilka Hall). The festival will function as normal in this new location for the year, and more information will be communicated about details closer to the event.
