The 2018 Moores School of Music Jazz Festival will occur on February 23 & 24, 2018 at the Moores Opera House on the campus of the University of Houston. The festival will feature trumpeter Dominick Farinacci and a full slate of Houston jazz artist judges that will be announced shortly.
The schedule will include high school/junior high/middle school performances all day day Friday and Saturday, with each band having a thirty minute performance slot along with a thirty minute judges clinic immediately following. At noon on Friday and Saturday, the featured guest artist will give a clinic in the Moores Opera House that is open to all participating bands and the general public. The Moores School Jazz Ensemble will perform on Friday night at 7:30 featuring a set of local jazz artists, and the Moores School Jazz Orchestra will perform on Saturday at 7:30 PM featuring the Guest Artist.
In a change this year, there will be additional prizes for the winning ensembles and soloists. As usual, awards will be given for outstanding MS/HS bands of each day, as well as for the festival. In addition, All Star awards will be presented to soloists along with outstanding MS/HS soloist of the day and the festival. All Outstanding Festival awards will be presented on Saturday, and the All Star Awards and the Outstanding Awards for each day will be presented on both Friday and Saturday.
In a change, the Outstanding HS band for each day as well as the Outstanding HS soloist for each day will be invited to perform with the Moores School Jazz Ensemble (Friday) and the Moores School Jazz Orchestra (Saturday). The Outstanding Band for Friday would be invited to open for the Jazz Ensemble and the Outstanding Soloist would be invited to sit in on a tune with the group. The band and soloist for Saturday would be invited to do the same with the Jazz Orchestra.
If you are planning to bring your group to the Jazz Festival, please fill out the following information form as quickly as possible to reserve your time. An email will be sent following your registration to confirm your time and gather more information. The deadline to register is Friday February 9, 2018, but slots will fill up quickly. The fees for the jazz festival this year are $250.00 for Middle School/Junior High Bands and Small Groups, and $300.00 for High School Big Bands. Registration Fees must be paid in full prior to your performance in order to go to the warm up room and stage area.
Checks brought to the Jazz Festival must be signed in and registered at the front desk immediately upon arrival. A receipt will be issued there. If you plan to mail your check in (checks must be received before your performance date and a receipt will be issued upon check in at the festival), please make your check payable to “University of Houston” with “Jazz Fest/your school name” in the memo line.
